This day I woke up at 9:00 of the morning to prepare myself because my newly met friends, they are Acehnese told me that they will pick me up at 10:00 and take me a tour in their city.
Imam, Yuli, Mery, Siti, Seri, and I first went in Tsunami Museum. It was a very good place. A place which everyone must see, It will remind you of all the experiences of Acehnese people before and after the very big tsunami on 26th of December 2004. That was the worst event in the history of the beautiful place of Aceh. This phenomenon really broke the Beauty of Aceh. Fortunately some nations gave help, they helped Acehnese people in reviving the beauty of their place. This place will remind us of how weak human beings are compared to their creators.
Then after that we had lunch then one of bang Toni’s friend named Yani arrived then we went to PLTD APUNG a wrecked ship pushed by the tsunami and been stranded in the middle of the city named ULEE LHEUE. This ship will make you realize how strong the tsunami was. Just imagine how 780 000 kilos of metal has been pushed by water. So how worst for the people and their houses, this disaster left Banda Aceh totally broken. But now it is one of the tourist attractions here in Aceh.
After visiting PLDT APUNG we went to one of the most beautiful beaches of Aceh the Lampuuk beach wherein we watched the sun goes down.

A day to remember
It was Sunday morning I did wake up early because my newly met friends told me that they will pick me up at 6:30 and we will go to a place called car free day. And yes they did. Car free day is a place wherein many people hangout to do dancing, we call it Zumba in my country. Some are playing futsal or football, badminton, that’s what we did there we played badminton, and some are jogging. After we played badminton for about three hours my friends decided to bring me in a park. It is a beautiful park beside a river wherein you may take a rest and have a peace of mind. While we were there we did some sharing of stories and we ate together. It was like a picnic. After that they brought me home and they did go home. It is a day to remember because as long as I stay with them I keep falling in love with one of their friends name Mery.

It was Friday, I was about to have my class in this day by 2:30 pm but unfortunately it’s been the schedule of our welcome ceremony. The university’s rector together with Dr. Hasan, vice dean of the university, labschool principal and some other teachers from faculty office and labschool as our mentors did welcome us in their university. In that ceremony they asked us some questions about ourselves and what do we expect in this program. We really felt that we are really welcome to be part of their university, it was really a very warm welcome for us. After the ceremony one of the teachers in Labschool, miss Natasha toured us around Aceh using transkotaeradja or the free blue bus. Riding with that bus was really an unforgettable experience. With miss Natasha we went to Lampuu beach and enjoyed the beautiful sight of the sea and sunset. Then after that miss Natasha brought as home.

January 26, we were all in school. Surprisingly, we had received an invitation from a school, namely Sekolah Sukma Bangsa in Pidie. Sukma Bangsa is a private school located in Pidie 2 to 3 hours travel from Darussalam, Banda Aceh. According to the letter we, the Filipino exchange students together with our faculty buddy are invited to meet their 21 Filipino students and do team teaching related to our subject of specialization in their school for two days. We were so grateful to hear that for we will be meeting some Filipinos in Indonesia, have new friends and surely to be treasured new experiences. Then, it was afternoon of January 27 when pak Rio, one of the teachers in Sukma Bangsa together with their school driver arrived in Unsyiah to pick us, and we left Banda Aceh to start our journey to Pidie. It’s been a long but enjoyable ride. We had some snacks together along the way then finally we had arrived in their school. They gave us a very warm welcome, we had met their school rector pak Martonis together with some of their teachers and we had a dinner together. After the dinner they showed us the house where we will stay and it was really good. They did give us a very great accommodation. With our two days of stay in Pidie we had many unforgettable experiences and memories to treasure. We did team teaching with some of their teachers who are teaching the subjects that we are specializing. We did get along with their respectful and disciplined students especially their 21 Filipino students. We really enjoyed our stay in Pidie, in fact I am planning to go back in that school for voluntary teaching together with my co exchange students because we really fell in love with all of them.

A heart braking day


February 6, I will never forget this day it was the day when my heart has been broken. This day was my departure date. It’s the end of my stay in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, it’s my day of going back home. I had a mixed emotion. I was happy because finally I will be reunited with my family and friends again, but broken because this might be my last time of meeting and seeing my new family, my Indonesian family.

I promise, I’ll be back!

5. Summary and Suggestions

5.1 Purposes of Practicum

Basically, The SEA Teacher Project or the “Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia” is a project that aims to provide opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia.

If I will base on my experiences, I can confidently say that this practicum really met all my needs, that its purposes are really helpful. This SEA Teachers Project helped me discover more about myself. It brought me new family to love, never forget, and be with again someday. It helped me learn a new culture. It helped me be a better person.

5.2 Procedures of Practicum

My first day in SMA Labschool, together with Dr. Hasan (our coordinator), miss Natasha (our faculty buddy, on the left), and bu Sukma (my cooperating teacher, on the right).

This one month program were divided into four phases, one phase per week.

For my first week, I’ve been introduced with the teachers and students, especially with my mentor and will be students along the program. It was also the week when I did the observation of my cooperating teacher’s way of teaching.

On my second week, I did the actual classroom teaching. I was given two lessons by my CT to work with. she checked and approved my lesson plans then I did the teaching, but she never left me alone in class. she was always observing and guiding me every time I teach.

My third week had been busy because of my preparation for my final evaluation. But then again, my mentor never left me. She helped me on preparing some of my materials. Then I did it very well.

Since my final demo was Friday, my mentor told me that they will tell me the result of my evaluation on Monday. So on my last week my mentor together with my supervisor showed me the result of my demo teaching. I’ve been so happy because I got it almost perfect. Thanks to both of them, they’ve been really good to me. I also want to thank my students for being very cooperative during my class.

5.3 Outcomes of Practicum

This practicum didn’t just help improve myself, discover new things, and have new experiences. It brought a family whom I really love and will always love forever. It opened my mind and heart about what love and humanity really means. It helped me how to be a real person. It really improved my personality. This practicum made me a better person.

5.4 The Challenges of Practicum

On the first place, riding on a plane has been a big challenge for me. In fact I was really nervous back then because it was my first time and I was alone. but with the help of God I’ve been able to overcome the fear and surpassed the first challenge. Another challenge for me was on how will I adopt with the new culture. The good thing was I had some friends, Filipinos and Indonesians and they all helped me in overcoming that challenge. The hardest challenge that I had encountered was leaving my new family. All of them, have been very closed to my heart and to be honest I did fall in love with one of my Indonesian friends. It’s been very hard for me to leave her. I just promise and I will surely make my promise that I will go back.

5.5 Overall Impression

Overall, my experience in Banda Aceh, Indonesia has been really great and unforgettable. I will always treasured all the memories that I had in that beautiful place. I promise and I am determined to go back.

5.6 Suggestions For Future Improvement

Suggestions for SEAMEO

First of all I want to thank you for this wonderful program. I hope more students like me will be given the chance to experience everything that we SEA Teachers had experience, because your program is really really great. It has to be prioritized. My only suggestion is it will be better if the program will be more than one month. It will help the students develop themselves more. Learn the language and the culture better. Be with their new family longer, and have more experiences to treasure.

Suggestions for my receiving university

You all have been good to me, to all of us SEA Teachers. I want to thank you so much for all of that. You’ve been our guardian during our stay in your university. The only thing that I didn’t like was you didn’t help us explore your place. You didn’t provide any tour around Aceh. we still had to make our own way just to explore your place and learn more about your culture. Next time it will be better and your will be new SEA Teachers will really enjoy their stay in your university if you will provide some tours.

Suggestions for my home university

Again, I would like to give you my deepest thanks for giving me the opportunity to be your representative in this program. I really really thank you for that. I want to give my special thanks to our college dean, Dr. Angelica Cortez and Sir Marlon Rufino for always helping, monitoring, and guiding us despite of the distance. I want to say I really love you both and thank you for everything. For my university, I would like to suggest that it will be better if you will give your SEA Teachers something like certificate or a plaque to give to their receiving university. They will really appreciate that.

4. Teaching Practice

Well, after my cooperating teacher checked and approved my lesson plan, I made my materials for teaching to teach the lesson to my class.

The first thing that I did was the checking of my students attendance, followed by a review about the last topic and a motivation for the students to be ready for the new lesson. After the motivation I started the discussion proper, and during the discussion proper I asked some questions to my students and my students also asked me some questions. After the discussion I gave my students an activity to do in order for me to assess their learning of the lesson.

4.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities

Since my class is not their first subject and they only do praying on their first subject every morning, I always start my class by checking their attendance.

I really love these students of mine for they are always active in discussion. They really enjoyed my class and I love that seeing my students enjoying while learning.

The next thing to do after discussion is of course to assess if how much learning your students got from you. So after my discussion I gave my students an activity for them to do in a group. I did this as a group activity because I want them to learn the value of unity, respect, and teamwork. The good thing was it’s been effective. I have assessed that my students really learned the lesson. Knowing that my students learned from me is already a success for me, and I was so happy for that.

The last thing that I did after they finished the activity was giving their homework. And as I always do I also gave them a motivation in a form of a video showing for them to have a background knowledge for their homework.

4.3 Problem Solving

Fortunately, during my stay in SMA Labschool there was no problem happened aside from the language barrier because not all of my students can speak the English language so what I did was asking help for their classmates to translate their answers in English. And sometimes I myself did translate the questions into Bahasa for all of my students to understand and be able to answer. Another thing that I did was discussing the lesson smoothly with a slow pace of speaking so that all of my students can follow.

4.4 Classroom Management

I haven’t encountered any difficulties in terms of managing my students inside the classroom because my cooperating teacher was always there to guide and support me. On the other hand, my students are very respectful. They do respect every teacher in their school including us, their practice teachers and they did never misbehave in my class.

I really loved my students, they did treat me not just as a teacher but as a brother and a friend. And my cooperating teacher she treated me as her son. I love them all, and I will always do. If I will be given the chance to go back, I would with all my heart.

3. Teaching Plan

3.1 Curriculum

The term curriculum refers to the lessons and academic content taught in a school or in a specific course or program. SMA Lab School Unsyiah implements 2006 competency-based curriculum (KBK). In my case my cooperating teacher assigned me the next two lessons in their English workbook for me to work with and make lesson plans.

I have made two lesson plans for my actual teaching about short stories and future tenses. Below is a sample of my lesson plan.

My mentor gave me the freedom to choose my own format of lesson plan as long as I will submit it to her for checking before I use it for teaching. So I did use the format that I am used to, our lesson plan format in my university.

2.1 Teaching Methods

A teaching method comprises the principles and methods used by teachers to enable student learning.

Based on my observation on my cooperating teacher, bu Sukma while she was teaching she’s using a variety of techniques in implementing the lesson that she has prepared. Mostly, she uses demonstration method which makes her easily get her students attention for she’s using different tools such as laptop, projector,speaker, and etc. in a great way. She’s always able to choose appropriate images, videos, and audios to spice the lesson and make the learning enjoyable and easier. I can also say that she’s using the learner-centered approach of teaching for she’s always asking her students’ opinion about every topic and helps them construct their own examples. She also considers the differences of her students in terms of their intelligence by giving them a variety of activities that will fit each of her students’ interest.

2.2 Learning Materials and Innovation

SMA Labschool, Unsyiah has a plenty of learning materials inside their campus. They have their very conducive library wherein you can find books, magazines, charts, CD films, and etc. that will really help you enjoy and advance your learning. They also have specialized room for each of their subject such as Biology room, Chemistry room, and etc. that will help students to learn based on their interests. As an addition, each of the students in SMA Labschool has their own books for each of their subjects that can be brought home for them to study anytime they want.

In terms of innovation in teaching and learning, SMA Labschool really provides quality tools that will help its teachers to teach effectively for better learning of their students. There are free to use projectors and speakers in their office for the teachers to use together with their own laptops. They also have their ICT or computer room that is being used in teaching their students on how to use different computer software and taking national examination online. Another thing that I liked in this school and surely helps its students is the accessible internet around the campus.

2.3 Sources of Learning and Technology Used by The Teachers

I and my co-exchange students while using the school provided internet access in preparing for our lessons.

The teachers in SMA Labschool do use their own laptops, and using the school provided internet access they do search for different materials from internet to spice their teaching and make the students learning easier and more enjoyable. About the other tools that will help them deliver their lessons very well such as projector, speaker, and etc. these are provided by the school. The teachers only need to log in and log out their names before and after borrowing anything from the office for it to be protected.

By the use of technology, student-teacher relationship becomes closer. it also provides fun experiences for both the teachers and students while in the process of teaching and learning.

2.4 Authentic Assessment Used by The Teachers

Authentic assessment is the measurement of “intellectual accomplishments of students that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful,” as a contrast to objective types of tests.

During discussions, the teachers ask their students questions that will activate their higher order thinking skills, they call it “HOTS” questions. these are questions that will require students to relate the answers in real life, for example based on their experiences, life situations, and etc. as long as related to real life. This questioning technique helps the teachers assess their students background knowledge about a specific topic and on the same time helps students learn effectively. Another one is collaborative work. The teachers are assigning students in group to finish a specific activity. By this the teachers are able to assess students learning in group and at the same time develop the students behavior because this activity will require them to value respect, teamwork, unity, and etc.

This was also my second week here in SMA Labschool as an exchange student, and together with my fellow SEATeachers we were so fortunate to meet the Philippine ambassador in Indonesia.

1.2 Academic Support System

The term academic support may refer to a wide variety of instructional methods, educational services, or school resources provided to students in the effort to help them accelerate their learning progress, catch up with their peers, meet learning standards, or generally succeed in school.

SMA Labschool Unsyiah provides some extra curricular activities for its students for them to meet their school’s learning standard and academic goals.

Classes are conducted from Monday to Friday 7.45 AM to 4 pm. On Saturday, students attend extracurricular activities such as training for their sports clubs, and sometimes they do also join debate competitions.

Labschool basketball team was formed in 2008, led by Agung Dwi Satriawan. The highest achievement of the first team was to be the 4th in an inter-high basketball competition hosted by SMAN 7 Banda Aceh in 2009. Labschool lost when competing the title of 3rd winner to SMAN 1 Banda Aceh, after winning over MAN Model Banda Aceh, 20-0. The next team was led by Faizin Risa.

1.3 Teaching System

Learning-teaching system
Labschool Unsyiah implements a learning and teaching system that is slightly different from other high schools in Aceh. One of them is the ‘moving class’ system. Students transfer to another class each time their class is finished. This creates different surroundings everyday and prevents students from becoming bored with a static atmosphere in school.

Another thing that I want to add, based on my observation on their teaching system is the positive effect of technological inclusion to their students. Teachers in SMA Labschool are great user of technology in terms of teaching, they can maintain the students’ attention even though in long classes. Aside from they are using high quality projectors and other tools in teaching, they are really good in choosing the appropriate materials such as videos and audios that will fit their students’ interests and at the same time related with the lessons.

1.4 Materials and Other Learning Sources

SMA Labschool has their own library inside the campus wherein students can find materials that can support their learning such as books, magazines, charts, compact disks(CDs) and etc. and at the same time they can feel comfort and relax, because of very conducive environment inside the library.

They also have an ICT or computer room wherein students are being taught on how to use different computer software. They do also use this room when the students are taking national exams online.

Another good thing that I really liked in this school is the accessible internet connection around the campus.

Here are the facilities in SMA Labschool that help the students learn in an easier and enjoyable way:

Library. On 28 January 2010, United States Ambassador for Indonesia, Cameron R. Hume visited SMA Labschool to donate USD 100,000 to further develop the library.[2]
Arts Lab equipped with musical instruments, including a drum kit, an electronic keyboard, electric guitars, and a bass guitar. Such instruments are rare and almost cannot be found in public schools in Aceh.
An internet wi-fi zone which can be accessed by students from 8 am to 4 pm daily.

1.5 Measurement and Evaluation System

Just like other institutions, SMA Labschool do use of diagnostic, summative, and formative test in measuring and evaluating their students’ learning. Based on my observation the teachers do diagnostic testing every time before any lesson to measure their students strength and weaknesses on a particular topic so that they will find out where the lesson should focus, and the appropriate strategies to use on their teaching proper. On the other hand they do use summative test in form of quizzes, recitations, and etc. in order to find out the learning progress of their students. Finally, they do administer formative test in the form of final examinations to measure and evaluate their student’s learning at the end of every semester.

1.6 General Curriculum

SMA Labschool, Unsyiah follows this 2013 curriculum.

The aim of the 2013 curriculum is to prepare Indonesian people to have the ability to live as individuals and citizens who are productive, creative, innovative, and affective and able to contribute to the life of the world, nation, state and civilization of the world
This curriculum is a reference for Unsyiah High School Laboratory in implementing education and learning that leads to the implementation of character education. Character education is interpreted as an effort to internalize the noble values ​​of the nation as mandated by national goals in the fourth paragraph of the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution and the objectives of national education in article 31 of the amendments to the 1945 Constitution and Law No. 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System. The noble values ​​internalized include: religious, honest, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, democratic, curiosity, national spirit, love for the country, respect for achievement, friendship, peace of mind, love to read, love of the environment, social care, and responsibility.

Based on the 2013 curriculum students must be able to achieve graduate competencies that cover the domain of attitudes, knowledge, and skills as well as subject groups according to the chosen study program. The strategy used is to describe Core Competencies in the curriculum into Basic Competencies which are then formulated into teaching materials and indicators of competency achievement in each subject.
Effective week in one school year (two semesters) is 38-40 weeks. The high school curriculum in class X, XI, and XII (according to content standards) are presented in the following table.

C. Curriculum content
Curriculum content of Unsyiah Laboratory High School Banda Aceh includes a number of subjects whose breadth and depth are in accordance with the core competencies and basic competencies established by BNSP, and local content developed by schools and self-development activities.

1.7 Teaching Plan

My cooperating teacher(the one in front) and my supervisor when I was asking for a copy of their lesson plans.

Each of the teachers in SMA Labschool makes their own lesson plan for each of their lessons. They often use semi-detailed in writing their lesson plans but sometimes they still write detailed lesson plans. Another thing that I have noticed is that their lesson plans even in English subjects are still written in Bahasa Indonesia.

SMA Labschool Unsyiah

Sekolah Laboratorium Unsyiah, also known as SMA Labschool Unsyiah is a community-based school that is a part of the Universitas Syiah Kuala complex in Banda AcehAcehIndonesia.

After the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami hit Banda Aceh in 2004, USINDO (The United States-Indonesia Society) built the school for children who were victims of the disaster.[1]

SMA Labschool was inaugurated on 27 July 2007 by the rector of Universitas Syiah Kuala, Head of BRR Aceh-Nias, and common-head of United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) Edward Masters and Arifin Siregar. The school was designed by an architect from Syiah Kuala University. On 5 June 2005, Pemerintah Provinsi Aceh through Dinas Pendidikan issued operational approval of SMA Laboratorium Universitas Syiah Kuala.

In October 2010, three years after its opening ceremony, SMA Labschool Unsyiah was appointed to be one of Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional.

The SEA Teacher Project or the “Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia” is a project that aims to provide opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia.

Based on the SEAMEO seven priority areas for the eleven SEAMEO Member countries to work together to improve the quality of education in Southeast Asia, “Revitalizing Teacher Education” is one of the priority areas in building and strengthening capacity of teachers in the region.

My journey to Banda Aceh, Indonesia

It was morning of January 7. I went to my school to meet my teachers who will accompany us, the participants of SEAMEO to the airport because that day was my scheduled flight to Banda Aceh.
It has been a very long journey. I traveled for two days and two nights just to be in Banda Aceh and the thing is it was my first time! It was my first time of riding in a plane and I was alone. When we arrived in the airport I was really nervous and exited. Nervous because it is my first time at the same time exited because I’ll be on different countries and discover new things.

When I arrived in Macau I was thinking “what am I going to do now? I have to wait here for 23 hours, where will I eat? Where will I sleep?” The good thing was my mother packed some bread inside my bag and that’s what I ate. But I didn’t sleep worrying that someone will steal my stuffs. Then finally my next flight was ready to board. So I did check in my luggage and waited on the gate for my boarding time.
January 8, the plane has landed in Kuala Lumpur, again I didn’t sleep waiting for my last flight. Then finally it was a morning of January 9 when the plane has landed in Banda Aceh, Indonesia wherein Dr. Hasan, ma’am Aria and two others were waiting for me to give a very warm welcome and bring me to their university.
